Aditya Resort, Sri Lanka, is located in the heart of the South. Here are the best places to visit in Sri Lanka that you have access to when you stay here. Most places can be visited as day trips.

Why Sri Lanka is a Top Travel Destination (2026 Update)

2026 is the year of value travel. This could mean different things. For one, it is about maximising the return on the investment that you spend on traveling. Again, it is focusing on getting high-quality experiences. Next, it is about the authenticity for the money spent, rather than simply travelling as cheaply as possible.

Value traveling is not an easy task. This is because it involves intentional planning and prioritising experiences over hypes/trends. Sri Lanka is a wonderful destination that people seem to come for value travel. We bring 5-star experiences at fair prices compared to the Maldives or Thailand. This includes beaches. Wildlife. Culture. Even city life.

Sri Lanka is also a top travel destination because there are new direct flights to Colombo. These flights come from Europe, Middle East, and Southeast Asia. This makes getting here easier than ever for travellers.

One other thing that is notable is that post-pandemic recovery is complete. When COVID-19 hit in 2020, the country's tourism aspect dropped. But now all national parks, temples, historic sites, tourist attractions, and the country as a whole is fully operational.

We have updated our safety standards and booking systems. The only minor con is that the railways of the hill country are under construction. This happened because of the 2025 cyclone Ditwah's effect, but all bus routes are fully available. In fact, more buses accommodate the lack of trains.

The south coast is drier and sunnier from November to April. It's great for first-time travellers who want to avoid the misery of catching a monsoon period.

The Top 10 Places to Visit in Sri Lanka (South-Focused, 2026)

While most blogs send you north to Kandy or Sigiriya, these 10 southern gems are where we send you. They are all easily reached from Aditya Resort in Hikkaduwa.

Galle - Walk around this 17th-century Dutch Fort. It's got new night markets & restored cute cafes inside.

Mirissa - Best for whale watching.

Udawalawa - See wild elephants in their natural habitat.

Hikkaduwa - Coral snorkeling and vibrant beach nightlife.

Kanneliya - Less-visited rainforest with waterfalls and endemic birds. Perfect half-day trek.

Ambalangoda - Home to authentic devil masks and stilt fishermen. Very few tourists go here; pure local culture.

Ella - Iconic nine-arch bridge and mini Adams Peak.

Sinharaja - Sri Lanka's only remaining primary rainforest.

Bentota - Water sports hub: jet skiing, river safari, turtle hatchery.

Colombo – Start or end here to catch the city sights.

Coastal Wonders and Secret Beaches (2026)

Galle (40 min from Aditya)

Galle Fort is a living UNESCO heritage site. We call it a living site because unlike the other historic sites, locals still live & work inside these 17th century Dutch walls. You will see school kids, mosques call to prayers, and even laundry drying.

You can walk the fort ramparts at sunset. It is a 1.5 kilometer loop with the best ocean views.

There is a new indoor night market. It happens every Friday and Saturday. It opens at 6pm and goes on until 10pm.

Visit the National Maritime Museum. It is quite a small museum, but with fascinating history. It is about 1000 LKR for entry. Go on a weekday morning before 10am to avoid the day trippers.

Mirissa (90 mins from Aditya)

Mirissa is lovingly called the whale watching capital of Sri Lanka. Blue whales and sperm whales are guaranteed to be seen between November and April.

In 2026, there is now an eco-cord that limits boats to one hour of observation per whale. It is better for the animals. It also means a shorter trip for you.

You can book these tours through Aditya. We will find you good tour guides who will give you the best experience.

There is a location called Coconut Tree Hill, which is Instagram gold. You will be able to get the famous Coconut Tree Hill picture if you go early in the morning. It gets quite busy during the day.

Hikkaduwa (a few mins from Aditya – you're already here!)

You can snorkel at the Marine National Park. There are glass-bottom boat tours as well. These are great for non-swimmers / kids.

You can take a moonstone manufacturing tour. You can even buy them directly, which will be much cheaper than buying in the city.

There's a Tsunami photo museum that's run by a tsunami survivor.

There is a Hikkaduwa harbour where you can watch the fishing boats return from the sea. You'll be able to buy fresh fish as well.

There is somewhat of a nightlife, but it is not crazy like Mirissa. The main road has bars and clubs, and you can even have a quiet evening at Aditya's beachfront.

Bentota (30 min from Aditya)

It's a central point for watersports. You can experience the Bentota river safari too.

The Kosgoda turtle hatchery is where you can help release baby turtles back into the water.

There's the Lunuganga Estate (Bawa's country home). The master architect's experimental garden.

Cultural Heritage Sites and Scenic Landscapes (South)

Udawalawa National Park (1 hour 45 min from Aditya)

Here you're guaranteed wild elephant sightings. There are over 500 resident elephants in Udawalawe. Unlike other parks, Udawalawe has no fences, so herds cross the main road frequently.

You can take a morning safari or an afternoon safari. Our team will even arrange private jeeps for you. It's one of the top 10 places to visit in Sri Lanka.

You can take a stop at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home.

Don't forget to bring:

Sunscreen

Cap or a hat

Sunglasses

Binoculars

Scarf to protect yourself from dust.

Kanneliya Rainforest (45 min from Aditya Resort)

Kanneliya is truly a little gem. Everyone goes to Sinharaja, but Kanneliya is close & there are far fewer tourists. You will need a guide to help you through your trek.

There are many endemic bird species here. There are swimmable waterfalls, and the best time to visit is between 7am to 11am. There may be rain in the afternoon.

Be prepared to run into at least one leech. Carrying salt is the best way you can get rid of leeches.

Ambalangoda (20 min from Aditya)

Ambalangoda is where masks are made in Sri Lanka. This is a Sri Lankan tradition that has been kept alive for generations.

The Ariyapala Mask Museum is a must-visit spot. It is run through three generations of mask-carvers. There will be workshop demonstrations here.

You can watch stilt fishermen fish in the local traditional way that Sri Lankans did.

Some other things to do in Ambalangoda:

Take a Maduganga river safari.

You can buy masks directly from the carvers.

You can take a visit to the Ambalangoda fish market.

There are temples that you can visit as well.

Sunandharama Viharaya is a place where you can visit on your way back. Traditionally this Viharaya belongs to "Vilegoda", "Nambimulla", "Maha Ambalangoda" and "Paniyanduwa" which are known as "Sathara peruwa" (the four states which are benefited by the Vihara).

Ella (2.5 hours from Aditya - better if you can stay overnight)

The Nine Arch Bridge is one of the most beautiful scenes you'll see in the area. Trains pass at 9:30am, 11:45am, and 3:15pm.

You can climb Mini Adam's Peak (Punchi Siripade) in about 45 mins. Wear good shoes because the path can be uneven sometimes.

Other good points are:

Ravana falls swim spot

Train ride from Ella to Badulla

Ella swing experience

Sinharaja Rainforest (2 hours from Aditya)

This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It's one of the last remaining primary rainforests in the world. 60% of trees are endemic - found nowhere else on earth.

The closest entrance from Aditya is Kudawa entrance (2 hours). You can even visit a tea factory nearby while you're in the area.

Colombo (2.5 hours from Aditya - better to keep this for the last)

Start & end your trip here. Most flights land in Colombo.

We recommend: arrive in Colombo, 1 night, then Aditya for 7 nights, then back to Colombo for the final night before flight.

There are so many places that you can visit when you're in Colombo. It's the ultimate city life.
